It's always a joy to relax in front of your fire, knowing that it is safe to operate. There are 3 main reasons why you should get your chimney swept:
Breathing fumes from solid fuel or gas fires can cause serious damage to your health and in worse case scenarios can be fatal. By having your chimney swept on a regular basis, this will ensure the flue is sufficiently clear to allow the fumes to escape freely and safely out of the chimney.
Having your chimney swept regularly will drastically reduce the chances of having a chimney fire. Chimney fires can cause damage to property. There could be damage to a chimney pot with it getting cracked or broken and the worst case scenario is you could lose your home to fire.
Whenever you use your fire, soot accumulates up the chimney. Over time, this will reduce the size of the flue which will thus lower the draw of the smoke upwards and out. If the chimney does not have enough draw or pull, the smoke will come back down into your room. This can affect your health but can also blacken your fireplace or the decorating around it. Some insurance companies will no longer pay out for chimney fire damage unless the flue has been swept and maintained by a professional chimney sweep who can issue a valid certificate of sweeping recognised by the insurance companies themselves.
